Burns to speak on balance of force, diplomacy

Burns to speak on balance of force, diplomacy

When U.S. government officials are analyzing an international threat, Nicholas Burns wants them to lead with one question: Instead of using force to prevent a potential conflict, can diplomacy be used?

Burns is an advocate for peaceful negotiation over the use of military power in international relations. Though the U.S. has led with military force since 9/11 — the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan being the foremost examples — Burns thinks the country needs to return to diplomatic activity as a first response to threat and leave war as only a last resort.

Chautauqua spends Week Seven 2013 examining history, practice of diplomacy

During Week Seven of the 2013 season, Chautauquans and visitors can look forward to a week devoted entirely to the theme of diplomacy, or the art and skill of conducting negotiations among states, groups or organizations.

“At a time when America’s place in global affairs is changing daily and becoming increasingly complex, Chautauqua will look into diplomacy as a central activity of global citizenship,” said Institution President Tom Becker. “We will look at the history of diplomacy, key dates and individuals in its development and hear from contemporary practitioners.”

Sherra Babcock, director of the Department of Education, said the inspiration for the theme stems from the overwhelming interest in foreign affairs on the part of Chautauqua.

‘Blellow’ collaboration fuels Children’s School fun

Teamwork is a quality revered by the entire Children’s School staff, but the teachers in the Blue and Yellow rooms are particularly driven by it, thriving on the interwoven nature of the two 5-year-old classes.

Blue Room head teacher Mark Doty has taught at Children’s School for more than 10 years.

“It’s a really interesting group,” Doty said. “It’s not really hierarchical. We all feel like we can do a good job when we’re working together. We don’t really separate out as much as the Blue and Yellow room — we call ourselves ‘blellow,’ and we try to do as many things as possible together.”

Week Seven lectures tackle ‘The Ethics of Cheating’

Chautauqua’s lecture platforms in Week Seven will examine honesty and integrity in public life and seek to understand how society lands on certain ethical standards — and how people rationalize skirting those standards. The morning lectures will show how cheating and dishonest behavior affect personal relationships, sports and academe, and also how it costs businesses thousands of dollars every year, a cost passed on to consumers.

Mystic Heart Program to focus on finding wisdom through Sufi meditation techniques

Mystic Heart Program to focus on finding wisdom through Sufi meditation techniques

The word “Sufi” is derived from the word “sofia,” which means wisdom. The practice and tradition of Sufism is about developing a deeper knowledge and understanding about life.

“It’s actually about finding the wisdom in life and everyday life, not just off in a cage,” Sharifa Felicia Norton said.

During Week Seven, Norton and her husband, Muinuddin Charles Smith, a professor, will return to Chautauqua to lead the Mystic Heart Program in the meditation traditions of Sufism. They will lead the daily morning meditation sessions and also the semi-weekly afternoon seminars Tuesday and Thursday. The afternoon seminars will focus on the Week Seven religion theme, “Creating Cultures of Honor and Integrity.”
