‘Our Town’ guest artists talk characters

Chautauqua Theater Company is a day away from the opening performance of the season: Thornton Wilder’s classic Our Town. This three-act play, which opens at 8 p.m. Saturday in Bratton Theater, is not only about the lives of the citizens of Grover’s Corners, but about the coming together of the guest artists who have experienced three different acting spaces: the stage, TV screen and silver screen.

The Massey Memorial Organ is an important part of the Chautauqua community, and it certainly has been significant to Jared Jacobsen’s life as well. Jacobsen, 65, has been coming to Chautauqua for 60 years, and he has been the Chautauqua organist for 16 years. Jacobsen shares what it’s like to be an organist and how the Massey Organ changed his life.

Riley Burton, sunny and full of giggles, sits on her bed in the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and flaunts one of her well-known grins. She takes a break from singing “Let it Go” from Disney’s “Frozen” to chat with pediatric oncologist Tracey Jubelirer. The pair talks about dolls and playing dress-up while the doctors run their tests and check her white blood cell count. Afterward, Riley colors a butterfly with a purple crayon, relaxed.

Review: Neubauer soars above poorly balanced repertoire

On Thursday night, the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra presented “Concerto for Viola and Orchestra,” a work Chautauqua Institution co-commissioned from composer Aaron Jay Kernis, with soloist Paul Neubauer in the spotlight. With a raw spirit and exceptional virtuosity, Neubauer beautifully portrayed Kernis’ masterwork, one underpinned by relationships and which focused on folk tunes, as the composer described it from the Amphitheater stage.
