Opera Young Artists fill the huge space of the Amp as Osgood leads CSO with high energy, family spirit

All who were in the Amphitheater Saturday evening know that we will hear these voices again — on another stage. But the hope that night, shared around, was far more venial — namely, that we’d hear just a little more right then and there, for the night was yet young and music that special.

But no avail.

We’d been given a powerful wrap-up of eight lead voices and 18 from the corps against the full Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra — all unamplified. That was, we’ll acknowledge, huge. It was from the sextet added to Act 2, or sometimes to Act 3, of Jacques Offenbach’s The Tales of Hoffmann, but crowded here into eight voices, plus the corps. And that spells big sound.

Before conductor Steven Osgood took the stage at the Amphitheater last year to conduct the Opera Highlights concert, before he accepted a position as a member of the conducting roster at the Metropolitan Opera, and before he conducted the world premieres of two operas by Tan Dun, he wanted to be an actor.

“It was when I discovered what opera was and how it really combined everything about classical music and the theatrical component of things, that really (that) was where I wanted to spend my life,” Osgood said. “That was what I found so seductive about it.”

Osgood’s background in theater led him to the position as artistic director of America Opera Projects for seven years, where he developed a name for himself in contemporary opera. Last year, the Opera Highlights and Pops concerts featured entirely contemporary works, which challenged the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra to learn new and emerging repertoire that was difficult by nature.

The works of John Adams, Leonard Bernstein, Jonathan Dove, Benjamin Britten and Lee Hoiby, among many others, will be featured in the Opera Highlights concert, held at 8:15 p.m. Saturday in the Amphitheater.

The performance will feature eight Apprentice Artists from the opera company’s Young Artists program and members of the CSO, under the baton of Steven Osgood.
