Young Artists to perform water-themed recital

At 4:15 p.m. today in the Hall of Christ, three Young Artists will be singing songs surrounding the theme of water. Other than creating a wide-open sea of metaphor, water holds a lesson for the singers: Like the substance itself, it helps to go with the flow and be malleable.

Rawlings: ‘American democracy not derived from Athenians’

Rawlings: ‘American democracy not derived from Athenians’

The prominent figures of Athenian society — Socrates, Aristotle, Plato — are widely considered to be the forerunners of American democracy. But according to Hunter Rawlings, classicist and president of the Association of the American Universities, these giants of history had little influence on Thomas Jefferson and the writing of the Declaration of Independence — and thus little influence on the democracy Americans enjoy today.

Rawlings’ 10:45 a.m. morning lecture in the Amphitheater was preceded by a performance by Bill Barker, a Thomas Jefferson interpreter dressed in full 18th-century regalia, complete with a tri-corner hat.

Orr to speak on honor, integrity through sustainability

Orr to speak on honor, integrity through sustainability

Environmentalist David W. Orr’s life has a forest-green, dirt-brown and robin’s-egg-blue foundation.

He grew up in the Alleghenies of Pennsylvania among hills, hemlock trees and boulders the size of a house — the perfect childhood playground. His imaginative playscape was the beginning of a lifelong love and respect for the earth, and he believes what he loves desperately needs help.

At 2 p.m. Friday in the Hall of Philosophy, Orr will add an ecological perspective to this week’s afternoon theme of “Creating Cultures of Honor and Integrity.”

“Honor and integrity have ecological requisites that are the bedrock of culture,” said Orr, Paul Sears Distinguished Professor of Environmental Studies and Politics at Oberlin College.

Baldwin teaches nature journaling in BTG Lake Walk

Baldwin teaches nature journaling in BTG Lake Walk

The Lake Walk this week, “Nature Journaling and MUCH More,” features Mark Baldwin, director of education at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History in Jamestown. Participants should come prepared to explore, write, sketch and share what they record.

Participants should bring their own blank journals and one or a few pencils. It is imperative, Baldwin said, that the pages have no lines.

Attendees should meet at 6:30 p.m. tonight under the covered porch at the Heinz Fitness Center — below the YAC — on South Lake Drive at the corner of South Avenue. The Bird, Tree & Garden Club sponsors this week’s Lake Walk in cooperation with the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy. Baldwin is pleased to be at Chautauqua on behalf of the BTG and Watershed Conservancy.

Dimick, Postel make case for why freshwater matters

Dimick, Postel make case for why freshwater matters

The relationship between humans, nature and water is like no other.

Though water’s importance for people is evident, nature’s need for water is often overlooked.

“We need to be thinking about the needs of nature because, after all, it is nature that sustains us,” said Dennis Dimick, executive editor for the environment of National Geographic magazine, at Monday’s morning lecture in the Amphitheater.

Dimick and Sandra Postel, founder and director of the Global Water Policy Project, spoke about the limited amount of fresh water on earth to kick off Week Four, themed “Water Matters.” The morning lecture began with a presentation by Dimick, followed by a conversation between him and Postel.
