Baldwin teaches nature journaling in BTG Lake Walk

The Lake Walk this week, “Nature Journaling and MUCH More,” features Mark Baldwin, director of education at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History in Jamestown. Participants should come prepared to explore, write, sketch and share what they record.

Participants should bring their own blank journals and one or a few pencils. It is imperative, Baldwin said, that the pages have no lines.

Attendees should meet at 6:30 p.m. tonight under the covered porch at the Heinz Fitness Center — below the YAC — on South Lake Drive at the corner of South Avenue. The Bird, Tree & Garden Club sponsors this week’s Lake Walk in cooperation with the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy. Baldwin is pleased to be at Chautauqua on behalf of the BTG and Watershed Conservancy.

Flower, rock, perennial and rain gardens are a few of the many types of gardens people create. A rain garden slows down the flow of rainwater to benefit the environment.

Ryan Kiblin, supervisor of gardens and landscaping since 2004, will present “Why Rain Gardens Really Work” as the Monday Lake Walk for Week Six. The presentation is at 6:30 p.m. today on the covered porch of Heinz Fitness Center, below the YAC, on South Lake Drive at the corner of South.

Kiblin will explain what a rain garden is and how the particular garden on Peck works. The group will walk to it, and she will show how attendees can take that example and turn it into a small-scale project for their own yards.

Lake Walk to feature weed harvester

Weed control in Chautauqua Lake has been a topic of conversation for years, but today, Chautauquans will have an opportunity to do more than just hear about weeds. They can see a weed harvester up close and learn about its operation from Paul Swanson, general manager of the Chautauqua Lake Association.

Swanson will begin the walk titled “Lake Harvester: See One in Action” at 6:30 p.m. today under the covered porch at the Heinz Fitness Center, below the YAC, on South Lake Drive at the corner of South.

Swanson has served as general manager of the CLA for the past 30 years. He manages about 20 employees who operate harvesters, transport barges, loaders and trucks and more. The operation is part of the management of the lake’s plant life, though there is more to plant life management than mowing.

Although the muddy or weedy condition of water is ready visible, Conroe cautioned against judging water quality.

To reflect Chautauqua’s week-long “Water Matters” theme, the Bird, Tree & Garden Club has scheduled additional Lake Walks in cooperation with the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy.

While most Americans are accustomed to turning on a faucet for water, some people in other countries do not have that privilege.
