The Chautauqua Property Owners Association wrapped up the season with its annual business meeting Saturday morning in the Hall of Philosophy.
Tom Cherry, supervisor of the Chautauqua Utility District, stole the spotlight at the Chautauqua Property Owner’s Association annual meeting Saturday in the Hall of Christ. Cherry took over the role of Chautauqua County Executive Vince Horrigan — who was originally scheduled to appear at the meeting but had a last-minute conflict — to speak about CUD’s plans for a new sewer plant.
While the bulk of the content at the Chautauqua Corporation annual meeting centered around the president’s report, the first item of business was presenting Hugh Butler as the Chautauqua Property Owners Association’s nominee for the Chautauqua Institution Board of Trustees.
Hugh Butler is a familiar face to many Chautauquans. He can often be found meandering through Chautauqua’s winding paths on his bike, proudly sporting his “Shared Space” T-shirt, or crusading for various causes and organizations both in and outside of the Institution’s gates.
When Eleanor Roosevelt first visited the Institution in 1929, it was love at first sight. She said she was attracted to the ground’s idyllic atmosphere, the family environment and, perhaps more than anything, the natural beauty of Chautauqua Lake.
In 1893, Chautauqua’s founding fathers built a wastewater treatment plant to protect Chautauqua Lake. One-hundred-and-twenty years later, the lake still needs protection, now more than ever.
The Chautauqua Property Owners Association held its annual business meeting of the season Saturday morning in the Hall of Philosophy.
The meeting began with the President’s Welcome, given by CPOA President Hugh Butler and included an approval of the 2011 minutes, an approval of the 2011 Treasurer’s Report, an outdoor lighting committee update and a nominations committee report.
Vice president Bill Neches presented an update on the outdoor lighting committee reminding Chautauquans that there is still one more informational lighting walk-about this season at 9:30 p.m. Sunday starting in front of the Colonnade.
Sherra Babcock, director of the Department of Education and Youth Services, wants to give kids something to go home and talk about.
Chautauqua Institution should provide the young community on the grounds with opportunities that will challenge them, she said, but also the opportunities that make them want to visit.
“One objective that we have had is to offer some things — when it makes sense — that will allow kids at whatever age to go home to the dinner table and have something to say about the theme of the week,” Babcock said.
Babcock discussed the importance of creating family memories at Thursday morning’s Trustees Porch Discussion.
