Political scientist Geoffrey Kemp has hosted annual lecture updates on the Middle East at Chautauqua for the last 20 years. Kemp, who serves as director of Regional Security Programs at the Center for the National Interest, returned to the Amphitheater stage at 10:45 a.m. on Wednesday to hold a conversation with Dennis Ross, counselor and William Davidson Distinguished Fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.

Ibrahim Kalin, chief adviser to Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan and a senior fellow at Georgetown’s Alwaleed Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, will speak Tuesday on his experiences in Turkish government leadership, interfaith relations in Turkey and his scholarship on Turkish perceptions of the West.

Experts tackle peace talks, uprisings in 2013 Middle East Update

For more than 20 years, Chautauqua Institution has hosted a Middle East Update, an annual program that brings in foreign policy experts to help Chautauquans understand the tightly wound and highly complicated knot of conflicts and relationships in the Middle East.

This year’s Middle East Update begins at 4 p.m. today in the Hall of Philosophy and will continue on Aug. 12 and 13 at the same time and place. Today, Geoffrey Kemp, director of regional security programs at the Center for the National Interest, will moderate a discussion with Dennis Ross, diplomat and counselor at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. Ross is also speaking at today’s morning lecture.

Middle East Update confronts challenges in increasingly volatile region

Geoffrey Kemp, director of regional security problems at the Center for National Interest, will host a Middle East Update at 4 p.m. today and Tuesday in the Hall of Philosophy. After each update, Kemp and guests will take questions from the audience.

“It’s a huge menu of issues, and we only have an hour. So we’ll have more than enough to talk about,” Kemp said.

Today’s guest, Robert Satloff, is executive director of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. He has written or edited nine books and contributes to a variety of newspapers. Satloff is also the Institute’s Howard P. Berkowitz Chair in U.S. Middle East Policy.
