Art drives Chautauqua in ways other communities and organizations only dream of, and early Sunday evening, the Institution thanked those who help make the full range of artistic and programmatic offerings found on the grounds possible.
Here we are at the final weekend of the 2014 Chautauqua season. Chautauquans have been returning to their communities for a couple of weeks now as school begins for children, college for young adults, artistic seasons resume for conservatories, theaters and symphonies; in short, life resumes.
The end of the Chautauqua season is in the air. The cool nights. The sound of crickets. The anticipation of pumpkin spice lattes at Starbucks. And giants in the Heritage Lecture Series.
When someone says “I am a piece of work,” what usually comes to mind isn’t anything good.
“This is one of my most precious passages in the Bible,” said the Rev. Allan Aubrey Boesak about Romans 8:31-38. “We don’t know who planted the church in Rome, but it was not Paul. However, he had a burning longing to see them.”
On Tuesday evening, hundreds gathered in the Amphitheater to celebrate Chautauqua’s 140th birthday. From the Drooping of the Lilies to the three-fold roll call, Chautauquans embraced the many traditions that are Old First Night.
As the 2014 Chautauqua Institution season continues, Fareed Zakaria, the respected analyst and host of “Fareed Zakaria GPS” on CNN, leads off Week Eight programming that will demonstrate the interconnectedness of the global society.
The pas de deux tradition at Chautauqua has become a highlight demo for the Charlotte Ballet, the long-time resident dance company here, and what a night — oh, what a night it was — with 10 sample experiences by eight choreographers for 12 dancers the Institution is privileged to call neighbors each summer.
The 10:45 a.m. Sunday Service of Worship and Sermon will feature the sacrament of Holy Communion as part of a special worship service in the life of Chautauquans.
