The Rev. Luis León was one of the 14,000 children who left Cuba between 1961 and ’62 in what was called the “Peter Pan Air Lift.” He recalled his faith journey at Vespers Sunday.
“We always see moments where we are grasped by God with 20-20 hindsight. I was born into the Christian faith by accident and I was born into the Episcopal Church by accident,” he said. “When I got on that plane, I was crying. A man sitting next to me said ‘Don’t worry, God will be with you.’ I stopped crying. He did not promise me anything, but when he spoke I believed him, and the greatest assurance I have is that God is with me.” He described his faith journey as “the joy, hope, love, mercy and forgiveness of God.”
